Apologies for the strange and mismatched formatting of this blog as the BlogSpot text entry system has a mind of it's own and will not keep things uniform. PC ATX POWER SUPPLY
Choosing A Power Supply:
You should be looking for a power supply of at least Bronze standard but preferably gold standard.
As long as it provides the required amps with very little voltage drop you should be OK.
NOTE: If the motherboard is 100% working and boots fine to the XMB / Dashboard but crashes during launching or playing a game it means the power supply isn't good enough and you will need to find another one.
ATX CONNECTORS
WARNING: Each pin of the following ATX connectors are only safely capable of carrying up to 6 amps.
IMPORTANT: Some ATX power supply wires do not match the wire colour standard therefore go by pin number instead of colour.
IMPORTANT: Non brand name power supplies rarely provide the quoted volts and amps therefore use a known brand name power supply for best results.
IMPORTANT: Some ATX power supply wires have text printed on them that allude to a thicker AWG wire size when in-fact the wire inside is a thinner wire size. Unfortunately you cannot know unless you cut the wire. This should only be the case for unknown brand name power supply manufacturers.
NOTE: See here for advanced details on all of the PC power supply connectors.

PCIe 6 pin:
WARNING: Some PCIe 6/8 ATX cables do not have the middle +12V wire present. If this is the case you can only safely supply 12 volts up to 150 watts through the connector.
WIRES
The two common wire sizes used for PC power supplies are AWG 18 and AWG 20. As the AWG wire number decreases the wire cross-sectional area increases. The safe maximum amp ratings that should be adhered to unless you are familiar with wire insulation temperature in relation to amps, are as follows:
AWG 18 - 10 amps
AWG 20 - 5 amps
AWG 20 - 5 amps
NOTE: AWG 20 wires with insulation rated for 60 degrees Celsius are only safely capable of carrying 5 amps. Look for insulation rated for 70 degrees Celsius and up as they are capable of higher amps.
WARNING: If these wire gauges are used in conjunction with ATX connectors this still does not override the fact that each pin of the ATX connectors are only safely capable of carrying up to 6 amps .

TECHNICAL
The PS3/PS4 sends 3.3v up the ACDC_STBY or the blue wire on Xbox 360s/ONEs to tell the power supply to turn on the 12V. It maintains this line at 3.3v while the console is on. When the console is in standby no voltage is applied to this rail.
An ATX power supply works the opposite way in that while the PC is off there is 5v on the PWR ON rail and when you go to turn the PC on the motherboard circuitry grounds the PWR ON rail resulting in 0v on that rail turns on the ATX power supply.
NOTE: The official standby voltage the PS4 expects is 4.8v but works fine on the slightly higher 5v ATX standby voltage.
NOTE: The official standby voltage the PS3 expects for CECHAxx - CECHKxx model PS3s is 5v which is exactly the same as ATX power supplies.
NOTE: The official standby voltage the PS3 expects for CECHLxx - Super Slim model PS3s is 5.5v but works fine on the slightly lower 5v ATX standby voltage. From all of the research I've done I haven't come across any issues.
ADAPTER CABLE:
Building an adaptor cable is recommended rather then soldering directly to the motherboard.
PARTS:
ATX Connector:
Get ATX 20/24 pin male connector for the adaptor cable. You should buy them new off of eBay\AliExpress\etc. Remove the unused pins to prevent unwanted shorts. Alternatively you can get them used off of an old PC motherboards using a heat gun to remove them.
Wires:
The wires can be cut from an old preferably faulty PC power supply. If you don't have a faulty power supply ask at your local PC repair shop you should be able to get them for free.
Console Connectors:
XBOX 360 / ONE
Get the DC output power cable with the connector from preferably faulty Xbox power supply. Remove it from the power supply and wire the adapter circuit to the end opposite the Xbox input connector.
PS3 / PS4
To get the PS3 / PS4 3/4/5 pin power cables look on eBay\AliExpress\etc for them. To get the 2 pin main power connector try to get an old faulty supplies then de-solder the connector. If you can't find or acquire the main 2 pin power connector you can use cable lugs that fit snugly onto the motherboard power prongs. Try an auto/electronics shop for these.

The stock Xbox cables can be tapped going by the wires colours are to be connected to the following ATX pins:

POWERING:
NOTE: When the console is in rest / instant-on mode any case fans directly connected to the PC power supply will continue to run.
OPTOCOUPLER:
Use one of these if you have a faulty console power supply. Provides complete standby voltage isolation between the PS4 motherboard and the ATX power supply. They look similar to the following picture.
Parts:
Optocoupler - If you have a faulty Console or PC power supply check it for one of those
Resistor - Value depends on Optocoupler specifications
OR
TRANSISTOR:
Parts:
Transistor - I'm using a 2N4401
Resistor - Value depends on the transistor specifications, 10K for the 2N440 transistor
Note: Other NPN transistor models will also work.
Use the following diagram. The red outline is the the through-hole transistor shape looking from above it with the legs facing the floor.
OR
WORKAROUND:
Without having the optocoupler/transistor and resistor pictured above by bridging GND and PWR ON on the ATX connector we can force the ATX power supply to be constantly on.
WARNING: When using this method do not connect the PS4 ACDC_STBY pin or the Xbox 360/ONE blue wire or motherboard solder point (Green).
NOTE: With this method you can use either +5V SBY (Purple) or +5V (Red) wires ATX power supply wires to supply the consoles required +5V standby power.
NOTE: After doing the workaround depending on the console the processor cooling fan/s may continue to run while the console is off while the ATX power supply is connected to mains power.
NOTE: Required for Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One X/S and PS5 consoles.
PINOUTS
As can be seen in the following pictures except the original Xbox I've used either text or colours to denote the pinouts. The following are the colours that correspond to the ATX wiring.
Yellow => +12V
Black => GND
Purple => +5V SBY
Green => Optocoupler/Transistor and resistor=>PWR ON
Red => +5V
ORIGINAL XBOX:
The original Xbox v1.0-1.5 requires 3.3v standby voltage at the pink point. The original Xbox v1.6 requires 5v standby voltage maroon point. ATX power supplies output 5V on the standby rail. On v1.0-1.5 Xboxes you must add a 5V to 3.3V regulator to the ATX power supplies 5V SBY rail.
Otherwise use the workaround method but run a wire from one of the ATX power supply connectors +3.3V rails.
WARNING: Although the power supply connectors will fit do not connect the ATX power supply directly to version 1.2-1.6 Xbox as it will damage the Xbox as the assigned pinouts are all different.

ADAPTERS:
WARNING: In the following pictures for a few of my adapters you will see that I have used cable lugs/crimps. If your plan is copy my idea I recommend you only use this for testing purposes while you are in the same room as your console. I say this because if a cable lug/crimp connection does not have good enough contact to the other electrical contact, in our case it would be the console power prong it will cause it to heat up and possibly melt the solder and/or the plastic. Do the following statement at your own risk. As for checking when the console is running you could touch lug/crimp on + and - side console power prong individually just to check how hot they are. I do this for my testing but if you have any kind electrical body implant I probably wouldn't try this, pacemaker etc. Warm would be expected but burning hot would be an issue.

I soldered two cable lugs/crimps onto a PC 8pin CPU power connector. I made two variants, one to be used inside the XB1X when it is all closed up that is at a 90 degree angle and another for testing purposes which is straight.
Standby Power:
I made a PS3 Standby ATX adapter PCB. Works with all PS3 models, FAT to Super Slim.
+12V AND GND PRONGS
COK-00x and SEM-00x - ATX CPU 8pin to PS3 +12v and GNDs:
I de-soldered the prong/plug receptacle from a PS3 APS-231 power supply. Then removed some of the plastic so that the 8pin CPU connector was able to be soldered.
DIA-00x and VER-00x - ATX PCIe 6pin to PS3 +12v and GNDs:
I spread the "wings" (the things at the end that fold over the wire insulation) out on the end of the lug/crimp connector so 3pins each side of the PCIe connector touched the lug/crimp "wings". Then soldered the pins to the lug/crimp.
DYN-00x, SUR-00x, JSD-00x, JTP-00x and KTE-00x:
I soldered two cable lugs/crimps onto a PC 6pin PCIe connector.

I made a PS4 Standby ATX adapter PCB. Works with all PS4 models, original FAT to Slim and Pro PS4s. Currently I am missing one of the 4pin connectors.

HINT: De-solder the connector with the cable plugged into it so that the connector pins don't move in the connector plastic when they heat up.

You need to build an adaptor cable.

As for the resistor and transistor diagram you are to solder the three output lines (PWR ON, GND and ACDC_STBY) to the corresponding pins on the PC power supply (PWR ON and GND) and PS4 (ACDC_STBY) motherboard.

By the look of it you have to reverse the two wires on the outside transistor legs.

In my project I am using an adapter already made for atx source where I can connect everything, buttom connect, disconnect, leds .... with all the voltages I need so I have everything separated and looks good. (I just do not use it for the 12v connection because I use 3 different wires of rails).

Even though it’s an afterthought for most builders, the power supply is actually one of the more important parts of a build. Picking a quality power supply can mean the difference between a well running system and one that suffers from crashes and boot failures. Worse yet, cheap generic models can literally explode into flames, taking the rest of your computer with it. g0kd5

ReplyDeleteHi, I followed this guide but I had a problem wherein my ps4 will not turn on at all. I used a 10k resistor and transistor as you showed but there is nothing. The light on the atx psu comes on but the fan doesn't spin up so I'm thinking its something to do with the turning on aspect. Anyone have a similar problem? (I have since put my ps4 pro standard power supply in and it works ok so I haven't tried anything lol)

ReplyDeleteIt would be possible but I'm unsure how the PS4 motherboard would behave as the battery voltage dropped or rose above 12v. You would need to make sure the voltage never went too high like 12.5v or higher. I haven't checked myself but I assume you'd still need to provide the motherboard with the 5V standby voltage.
DeleteI found some 12v ATX power supplies online somewhere about a week ago. I think the 500W was like $300, so they're not exactly cost effective, but if i ever manage to build a camper with a solar setup I'm going all 12v with either a ps4 or a desktop computer running off the 12v through a car stereo system and one of those 12v monitors i found on Amazon. I have an inverter but it's a piece of crap 250w and I think it's silly to jump the 12v up to 110 just to have the psu in the ps4 kick it back down to 12v. Thank you so much for this write up, by the way, I had been thinking about rigging a ps4 into 12v by removing the power supply altogether and applying direct current to the appropriate pins on the motherboard but I'd rather have a proper psu to regulate the power.

DeleteMy wiring has been the same as the one I did on my Xbox 360 and haven't experienced any issues. Can you please explain to me why you have a 47K resistor on one of the 5v rails.
I was following another tutorial and someone said to put one there, but the more I thought about it there really is no reason for it. So I went ahead and did it the way you have and it worked great. Here are some pics. Thank you for your help, I'll make a youtube video on it soon.

Paper clip would be fine for testing but you might want to find something more permanent. The resistor / transistor method is useful if you don't want the PS4s, 360s and Original ONEs fans running while the power supply is on but the PS4s, 360s and Original ONEs is off.

ReplyDeletei tested my pro on 1st power supply 350 watts it was only beeps with no light and after few seconds hdd click and pro off. then i run on 650 watts pro run with solid blue light with no signal and disk ejecting no safe mode and fan spinning. after few tries pro beeps with no light and shutoff after few seconds with hdd click. then yesterday i got other power supply 380 watts and solder resistor and transistor same as you said power supply on with ps4 pro power button but same issue only beeps no light and shutdown after few seconds with hdd click. is power ic of motherboard is burnt or 380 watts are less for pro 7016b model? if you know the problem please tell me Thanks
Was the PS4 motherboard in working condition before you tried to connect it to the PC power supply. Meaning did you actually see it working fine before with your own eyes. Can you please describe the wires count, wire sizes, lengths and how they connect to the PS4 motherboard.

How are your wires connected to the motherboards two main power prongs 12V and GND? Soldered, with cable lugs/crimps or just wrapped around them.

DeleteThe only thing holding me back from liquid cooling non-exploitable/jailbreakable consoles is the cost of the parts doing a different setup per PC case.
Now I'm seriously thinking about building a single external system that I can just hotswap between systems using quick disconnects. Doing it this way will also eliminate a lot of the possible leak points inside the PC case.

I'm going to use an old 600 watt ATX power supply that I've torn apart to power an old car amp at home so I don't have to worry about the ATX connector. I have a question regarding the ATX turn on circuit. I've never done any electronics soldering so I just want to be sure that it's cool to just solder the resistor to the middle pin of the transistor and shrink wrap the leads individually. ReplyDeleteI have PS4 PRO CUH7215B. I was changing the laser on my drive when the PSU fell out and ripped off the connector. It took the pads with it. I have been investigating a post you interacted with psxhax, where you helped a member tap into alternate spots on the bottom of the board. I need to do this as well, and wire directly into the psu.
The only real question I have is: where is the 4th pin 5v alternate spot on the motherboard? Can I tap into the 1st 5v pin spot on the motherboard? it's the only alternate pin that has me puzzled, and I can't find the spot.

DeleteIf the console boots fine to the XMB / Dashboard but crashes playing a game it means the power supply isn't good enough and you will need to find another one.

hello i want to connect an old xbox 360 fat 175w power supply with an xbox 360 slim ... coming from the old power supply there are 3 yellow, 3 black, 1 red and 1 blue ... but in the picture there are now 4 yellow inputs on the motherboard and more than 3 black ones. how do I continue there ?!

DeleteLooks like the slim requires only two of the three yellow and black wire pairs from a 175 watt brick to safely supply the required watts and amps.
DeleteAs for the multiple coloured solder points just solder to at least any two 12V and two GND points.
So that you don't have any loose unsoldered wires sticking out you could just solder all of the wires to the corresponding points.

ReplyDeleteMy Xbox one psu died over the weekend so I decided to do this mod and save me from buying a knockoff psu (Microsoft doesn't make them anymore). Mod works great for using the system, my only problem is that sleep mode doesn't turn off my psu. I have to perform a "full shutdown" in the settings menu for the atx psu to actually turn off (even with the transistor). Any suggestions?

DeleteCan't say I've seen one with an indicator light on it. This specific ATX unit only has a single color led (blue) and an internal fan that both turn on only when the psu is actively on.

DeleteYes but remember I have labelled two pins as +5VSB when in-fact only one pin on the PS4 motherboard is. The other is actually ACIN_DET. So make sure your pins correspond to the matching pinout on the PS4 power supply.

DeleteThe main PS4 Pro +12V and GND power prong wires must be at least 14awg wire if using a single wire for each.
The purple spot connected to the large copper area is the regular +5V standby power. The purple solder point that has a single tiny copper trace attached to it is for ACIN_DET.
My ps4 pro works after following the guide & diagram using ATX. But when loading the game the unit turns off and i noticed when turning on the ps4 pro the fan is rotating the opposite way. Dont know what went wrong... So for my bad english
ReplyDeleteTurning off after loading a game or just after actual gameplay is about to start / or starts usually means the power supply cannot supply the amount (amps) or quality of power the PS4 requires. As for the fan spinning backward I have no idea why that would happen.

ReplyDeleteIf your talking about the using the Xbox one power cord wires mine and the other tutorials on the internet I've seen only have red, yellow, grey, blue and black wire colours. Maybe you have an unofficial power supply. If so look at the following blog and find the corresponding points and wires using a multi-meter buzzer function.

You will need to use the PCI-E connectors.
DeleteYou could use both at the same as long as you started the PS4 first to turn on the 12 volt then started the Xbox. You would need to turn the Xbox off before the PS4 when your done.
Because of the nature of how you want them to operate you would be better off to use the workaround but remember the PS4 fan and any power drawing devices connected to the power supply will continue to operate until the power supply is disconnected from the mains power.

1. Make sure the wire colours match the power supply pinouts. As I said sometimes the power supply wire colours are different. If in doubt go by the connector pinout and not the colours.
2. I only provided the complete PS4 slim 4pin connector pinout for CUH-200* model slims. It may be different for the CUH-210* and CUH-220* models.
3. Are you using the transistor and resistor or the workaround method? If the transistor resistor method doesn't work it is possible either could be faulty so try another one. Also double check your transistor legs are soldered to the correct ps4 and atx points. If it still won't work try the workaround method.
Thank you for the instructions. Now I got it right I forgot the red wire 5v it starts up but it gives 3 times a tone and shuts down the second pin with the transistor/resistor font work so I wired the Green and Gnd wire together and that worked for me but yes it shots down after the startup with the 3 time tone.

Except the start up and ejekt button from the original ps4 slim to start it. Have any ideas? My Watercooler comes next week but I want to test it without the watercooler so I can see if the Playststion boots to the game or another application but nothing.

Don't worry about the transistor resistor method until you get the work around method working.

With the PS4 not turning on with the controller have you got antennas connected to the motherboard and running to outside the PC case? Cause when I didn't it was really hard to get the controller to turn on the motherboard. I had to wave the controller all around the area till the PS4 received a faint signal to turn on. After that it would work for a few seconds then disconnect. Using antennas mounted on the PCI slot fixed the issue.

With the workaround method only connect the GND (Black) and two +5V (Red) to the PS4 4pin connector. Do not connect the green wire/resistor/transistor at all as it isn't needed for the workaround.

Remove the PWR_ON and GND connection to stop using the workaround method.

Pin 2 - Connect to Resistor that is connected to the transistor middle leg.
Pin 3 - GND
Pin 4 - Purple
You need to use +5V_SBY (Purple) because without PWR_ON and GND connection the power supply does not provide +5V on the red wires. The +5V_SBY (Purple) wire always has +5V coming out of it.
If the above doesn't work you will probably just have to use the work around method or get another power supply.

I do have an issue however in creating this adapter that you are outlining to power a ps4 pro with an atx psu. Is there any chance you could upload a picture of the adapter you created? DeleteThe first cable is the 6 pin pcie connector that goes from the atx psu to the prongs on the ps4 motherboard, with the three 12v wires combined into one (connected to the 12v prong on the ps4) and the three GND wires combined into one (connected to the GND prong on the ps4).
The second cable is a modification of the cable that connects the stock psu to the ps4 by the following steps (skipping the always-on workaround as I already have a switch connected to my 20/24 pin connector):
1) join the two 5 volt connections into one and plug that into a 5v on the 20/24 pin connector.
2) connect GND from the wire to the GND in the 20/24 pin connector
3) do not connect the ACDC_STBY on the original cable to the 20/24 pin.
Please let me know if I have understood correctly, just want to be sure I won't fry the board. Thanks again!

So I had no problems with restarts. Safe mode database rebuilds and sleep mode resumes.

ReplyDeleteJust try it and see. From what the data sheet says I assume the base needs around 0.6-0.7V.
Remember transistors are like LEDs and need a resistor otherwise they'll burnout. Put a resistor on the transistor base.
The original way I did it works for solid color LEDs but for some reason when I hook it up to color changing LEDs they start to flicker almost as if the touch sensor is drawing to much power. Hello, Finalman! I love your work and have been following you for a while on psxhax. I came across a power issue I thought you may (hopefully) have some insight to:
ReplyDeleteLong story short, I was given a Slim (SAE-003) that shows no life at all when assembled. No LED, beep or response to buttons. I took it apart and tested the PSU and found it works fine. It gives 12v and 5v. The problem?
The board shows no 3.3v at all. Nowhere. In fact, using photos I found to test parts I find that the board only shows 5v and 2v lines, no 3.3, 1.8, 1.2 or 0.6v.
It also shows shorts almost everywhere! Every cap under the APU, HDMI IC, HDMI Port, random caps other places, etc.
1. Is there a specific set of power supplies (coils, mosfets, etc) on board that create the PS4's 3.3v and, if so, do you know which?
2. Can one bad IC or component cause shorts to appear across the board? I assume the APU but can a Southbridge or HDMI IC alone cause that much chaos?
Thanks for any insight, man! You're dang near a genius with this stuff so I had to ask as I'm out of ideas at this point. I'm stuck with this fix. I assume/hope the place that makes 3.3v has blown parts that, if replaced, will give the 3.3v and stop the shorts. Thanks for any time you can lend me!
PS: after more research I'm told the caps under the APU should short. They're likely inductors. I wish we had PS4 schematics...

ReplyDeleteI have a problem with a ps4 pro CUH-7115b, which when turned on shows the blue led and a beep for a second and then turns off. It does NOT give a chance to put it in safe mode. I have tried everything from opening it and changing thermal paste, cleaning all the dust, letting it rest for 1 week without power, etc. I have read that many users have temporarily fixed the problem by opening the power supply and bridging the 5v pin. and the standby pin of the source, they connect it to the play4 and with that they manage to turn on the console, the disadvantage is that since it will receive 12v constantly, because when turning it off, they must disconnect it from the current when they are not using it.

DeleteYou really need to test another power supply in the PS4, optimally without buying a new power supply for the test or your power supply in someone else's PS4. That's the only way you'll know what is bad.

He is using what I describe in this blog as the workaround method where the PC power supply remains on permanently. Which is fine for testing purposes. Yes it's the same for the PS4 Pros just use the pinouts for your model PS4 Pro as seen in the blog.

Make sure that all of the wires go to the correct places before connecting the PC power supply to the mains electricity.
I am interested in carrying out the process with jumper cables and cable lugs, but what type of jumper cables and cable lugs should I buy specifically to connect the power supply to the ps4pro? DeleteI don't know the name or model but go to you nearest car electrical repair shop and show them the PS4 pins or give them the PS4 main 12v and GND pin measurements and ask if they could sell you some suitable cable lugs/crimps.
DeleteMine were very tight so I had to shove a precision screwdriver into them to widen them out a bit. Now they are pretty much perfect.
I just happen to be lucky and my brother is an auto electrician and he has all kind of cable lugs/crimps.

I've seen people posting about the PS4 power adapters. I do have a few empty boars that I can partially populate.
ReplyDeleteJust be aware I cannot provide the adapters with the PS4 4 or 5 pin connectors as I only have the two connectors actually seen in my pictures above. You would have to de-solder your own from your faulty PS4 power supply or cut the 4 or 5 wire cable and then solder the wires directly to my circuit board where the connector legs would have been.
I'll think about it over the next few days whether I'm willing to sell them.
That sounds awesome and I am down to solder the board if need be.

Hello. i did 1 ps4 pro. The machine starts up, allows the system to be installed and the games to run stably for 12 hours. After starting a game, however, everything stops and the console crashes. I think it's because of the kidney power supply. Now I will replace 1 thermaltake tr2 s with 500w. However, I brought both the 5-pin and 12-volt connectors from the 24-pin cables. Would it be better to bring it down from the 6 or 8pins connector? Or do I tie up several pairs of cables to get the maximum wattage?

DeleteNo resistor needed for the standby voltage as the PS4 powers supply delivers 4.8v. ATX power supplies offer 5v standby instead. Since the difference is so small it works just fine.
Hi, thanks to you I've been powering my PS4 slim for almost a year now with a ATX power supply, everything works well except sometimes power suddenly cut out and doesn't work until I unplug and plug 24 pin ATX jack, even after it will only boot to XMB, if I launched a game, it start happening again until I simply do something changes to the wires I've soldered into PS4 motherboard pins or the other end with ATX 24pin female jack. I can see a lot of burn marks with 12V1 pin and the white jack(shell part) is almost black now due to burns, and recently ATX power supply male 24pin male jack's 12V1 plastic part broke due to the heating and cooling overtime. Once fixed I can play up to days and months until this problem starts again, can you please tell me what could be the problem here? I'm not an expert just read your guide and did these, I don't know the issue other than 12V1 is overheating, but I played this for 3 months without an issue before this start occuring 3 days ago, and 4 times in a row now.. (This used to keep happening until I buy a new female ATX jack(didn't have a proper one before) then it was fixed but I don't know what to do anymore. Now my hard drive corrupted 3 times because of this, I don't think this PSU is bad, maybe it is but still.. 3-4 days ago this started happening while I was playing Red Dead Redemption 2, but I played it for more than 30 hours, so power supply can provide enough power but wires may not? The problem is I can't use x2 18AWG wires and solder them to the female 24pin jack (I used this method before but I could only a play a week or so then had to resolder the pins to play). Forgive me if I wrote too much, but I wanted to tell you my whole story. Thank you! :')
ReplyDeleteA burnt connector has two possible causes:
DeleteOne pulling to many amps through the connector pin.
Two the connector pins no longer join snuggly and are instead loose causing electrical resistance which results in heating and warping of the pins shape.
Number two may have resulted from the number of times the heating and cooling has occurred. If the 24pin male jack pin has warped it would need to be replaced.
As for the number of wires you should be using two 12v and GND wire pairs(4 wires in total) on PS4 slim.
If warped it might not look it visually but even small changes could result in poor contact when the pins join.
DeleteThank you, I had to use 1 wire at the end, because last time using 2 wires they hardly fits inside the pins on ATX psu connector and also hard to solder to the PS4 psu connector as they are around 2-3mm after combining. It also had poor contact with small pins like you said. So I removed the power 12v+ 17amp wire from the ATX connector and connected it directly to the wire coming out PS4 slim connector,then taped it with electric tapes after using heat sleeves for more safety.It was stable and no more burns, (I just removed the heat sleeves to confirm), however recently a gecko killed the PSU, and I'm planning to buy a new one. I like the idea of your motherboard piece for connecting the PSU and PS4, did you remove that connector from a PC? The pins looks so strong than the one I got from a repair shop (mine were so fragile and thin). Maybe I'll use two 18AWG wires as you recommend, I bought a connector from Ali before but these wires weren't 18AWG even they printed it on the wire (more likely 26awg) compared to the wires I use (from an old ATX PSU), they are pretty solid and strong X10 times.

Anyway I found a single rail power supply which says 17amp on 12v+, I wanted to confirm if the console works before I buy a new one. There is a beep and it turns off afterwards, cannot hear a beep again until unplug and plug, it was exactly like when my original PS4 PSU died, but replacing a new one fixed it. Maybe this PSU doesn't have enough amps or something?Can a short circuit on the ATX PSU damage the PS4 internals and it's dead?

ReplyDeleteMake sure you are using the minimum amount of wires specified. Try a different power supply preferably from a well known brand name.

ReplyDeletehello, could you give me a help. 6 months ago I installed a 500w ATX source on my PS4 FAT, and it worked very well, I was able to play for many hours. But after a couple months, it started to shut down by itself when it started to load some game, or when there was a very large explosion of effects with a lot of processing.
ReplyDeleteOther times I'd turn it on and the game would run for hours, other times it wouldn't.
I put the amount of yellow and black wires you indicated, but still the ps4 started to turn off at the slightest high processing signal. I already changed the fan and hd for a new one, but the problem remains.
I used the wires from an old power supply to make the connections. The 12v wires I joined all in one and fit in the correct place in ps4, and the black wires I wrapped all in one too. The ends of the wires are fitted to the 12 and neutral terminals of the 500v atx.
Should I do some soldering? Or buy different wires?

DeleteYou should always have a official spare console power supply around to do testing to rule out the power supply being the cause. Otherwise try a different PC power supply.
If the results are the same no matter the power supply then it'll be a motherboard issue.

ReplyDeleteHello. I tried this with my Xbox One but something appears to not be working correctly. I connected the two yellow wires and the two black wires to the PC PSU. I also connected the red wire to the purple wire on the PSU. Instead of the resistor I wired in a switch between the green wire and one of the ground wires. When I flip the switch on, the PSU fan and the XBox fan keep turning on and off without the Xbox itself turning on. What am I doing wrong?
